A personal site for writing, motorcycle trips and travel — rebuilt to be quieter than it used to be.
Genesis
It started as a blog, went through the usual sequence of rebuilds, and has now settled into something deliberately plain: text you can read, pictures you can look at, and nothing that interrupts either of those to ask you a question first.
Twenty-odd years of having opinions in public had accumulated across several platforms and one abandoned CMS. This is where the surviving material lives.
The address has moved once. It ran as thomas-sittig.de from 2007 and has been thomas-sittig.com since 2015 — the writing is older than both domains, which tells you roughly how long this has been going on.
Features
- Writing — long-form pieces and short observations, published when ready rather than on a schedule.
- Journal entries, filed inside the writing, each carrying a verdict for how far the outcome drifted from the original plan. There are four verdict levels. The mildest is “slight detour”.
- Rides — motorcycle trip reports, mostly running north–south through Europe, written up once the memory is sharp and the saddle soreness isn’t.
- Travel — notes written after the fact, when it’s clear which parts actually mattered.
- Photos, grouped into sets rather than dumped in a stream.
- Projects — this section, for the things built when nobody is paying for them.
- A feed, for anyone who still keeps a reader. Some of us do.
Who it’s for
Mostly nobody in particular, which is the freedom of a personal site. In practice: people who found a piece through a search, people deciding whether to work with me, and me, looking up what I thought about something in 2011.
Where it stands
Active, and permanently unfinished. A personal site is never done, only abandoned, and I haven’t abandoned this one yet. Every rebuild has removed more than it added, which feels like progress even when it is mostly just deletion.
